Dynamic Response and Safety Analysis of “ Xuanji” Steering Tool

Abstract: The“Xuanji” steering tool uses three independent wing ribs which push against the borehole wall to generate bias force,soas to achieve efective control of wellbore trajectory and thus improve drilling effciency. However,this design complicates the dynamic behaviors of the botom hole assembly(BHA).Depending on the special structure and material properties of the“Xuanji”steering tool,and considering the factors such as wellbore trajectory,driling assembly,contact collision between drillstring and wellbore,and bit-rock interaction,a dynamic modelof entire drill string with the“Xuanji” stering tool and asafetyanalysis model of the“Xuanji”steering tool and BHA were established based on the Lagrange equation.Then,on the basis of test verification,and actual wels,the influences of drilling parameters and centralizer positions on the dynamics of BHA were analyzed. The results show that increasing the weight on bit significantly increases the bending deformation and vibration intensity of the BHA,and the equivalent stressof the“Xuanji”steering tol (at drive shaft)greatly increases.Increasing the rotation speed does not necessarily exacerbate the bending deformation of the BHA,and does not greatly mpact the equivalent stressand fatigue life. Installng a centralizer may not necessarily improve the bending deformation of the BHA,but itcan inhibit vibration to a certain extent.Theresearch conclusions provide a guidance for the use of the“Xuanji” steering tool.
