Head injury prevention for crash cushion in aircraft seat

Abstract:In view of the lack of quantitative analysis on the protection efect of the crash cushion for rearward-facing VIP seats in corporate aircraft against occupant head injuries during the emergency crash, a simulation model is created and calibrated based on the dynamic test results to evaluate the head injury prevention effect of the crash cushion,including installation distance,cushion dimensions and foam rigidity.The results show thatif the seat is not equipped with a crash cushion,the head injury criterion (HIC) of the occupant model is 354.88,which is about 20% higher than that of the seat equipped with a crash cushion.When the installtion distance is increased,the head impact resultant accelerations first increase and then decrease. The head impact resultant acceleration reaches its maximum when the installation distance is 231mm . The head injury of occupant is slightly affected by slight variations in the rigidity of the crash cushion foam.
