3D discrete element simulation and test verification of complex form gravel particles

Abstract: Using the 3D laser scanning device to obtain the gravel’s surface point cloud coordinates,the geometric morphology is reconstructed,the polyhedron discrete element method based on the energyconserving contact theory is applied to describe the motion and interaction of gravel particles. Two benchmark discrete element models are constructed: the angle of repose test and the direct shear box of the gravel particles. The corresponding laboratory tests are running concurrently. The results show that polyhedral element is feasible to simulate the microscopic characteristics of gravel particles,the discrete element model can accurately simulate the dynamic and static characteristics of the gravel particles,and the shear stress-shear strain relationship of the gravel particles under various normal loads and the evolution of the shear zone.Which provides a reference for the polyhedral discrete element method to explore the material mechanical properties of irregular gravel particles.
