Abstract Thepapersystematicallyanalyzestheinterelationshipbetween thelongand shortamsoftheL-shapedbends for naturalcompensatiointhemalpipingengineeringBasedonthermalxpansioncaculations,tispaperproposesthepriciplesfor selectinglongarmlengths.Bycomparingtheoreticalformulaswithstressanalysissoftwareresults,itdeterminestheminiushort armlengthrequiredtoaccommodatethermaldisplacementcompensationof thelongarmundervarious temperaturediferentials. Comparative analysis reveals that theoretical calculations for L- shaped bend compensation provide a significant safety margin. The derivedshortarmlengthvariesdependingontheratioofcalculatedstresstoallowablestressInthedesignof thermal piping engineering,longershortamsshouldbeprotizedtomaximizethtealpipingsystem'sinherentcompensationcapacitytreby minimizing the required compensation length throughout the thermal pipeline system.
