Morphological Observation of Different Developmental Stages of Pea Aphids after Parasitized by Aphid Cocoon Wasps

Abstract: In order to explore the effect of parasitic wasp parasitizing on the external morphology of pea aphid,this study collected zombie aphids from the alfalfa planting area around Shanxi Agricultural University, hatched them and established the stable populations in the laboratory. A long term raised stable pea aphid population was selected and used as the experimental object. The unhatched zombie aphids and part of the host plant tissues were placed in a specific breding box for incubation and fed with fresh stems and leaves of pea seedlings, with no more than

20 adults in each box. The feed was replaced every 24 hours. At the key time points such as 24、 72、120、168 hours after parasitized by aphid cocoon wasp,the external morphology of the parasitized aphids was observed. The results showed that the body size of the pea aphid was significantly enlarged after parasitizing, and the body color was gradually darken. The appendage structures such as antennae and feet were gradually atrophied in the late stage of parasitism, and finally formed“zombie aphid". The results showed that parasitic wasp parasitizing had a significant effect on the external morphology and physiological activities of pea aphids. These changes were closely related to the physiological defense response of pea aphids and the growth and development of parasitic wasp larvae in vivo. This study provides a morphological basis for understanding the interaction between parasitic wasps and pea aphids,and also provides a theoretical reference for the biological control of pea aphids using parasitic wasps.
