Polymer-Based Materials for Highly-Efficient Uranium Extraction: Structural Design and Functionalization Strategies

Abstract:The fullutilization of marine uraniumresources holds significant strategic importance for sustainable nuclear energydevelopment.However,achieving eficient uranium extraction fromseawaterremains highlychallenging becauseof theultra-low uranium concentration,complex ionic environment,and microbial fouling in marine ecosystems.Todate, numerous advanced materials with exceptional extraction performance havebeendeveloped.Among these,polymer materials haveemergedasoneofthe most promisingcandidates for industrial-scale seawater uranium extraction,owing to their scalableproduction,tunablearchitecture,andsuperior bindingafnities.From thepoint of structural designand functionalization strategies,thisreview presents an overview of the latest advancements in the polymer-based uranium extraction materialsand the methodologies towards the function-oriented developmentofuraniumadsorbentswith high adsorption capacity,selectivity,and biofouling resistance,along with various emerging polymer-enabled seawater uranium extractiontechnologies.Furthermore,thecritical technicalchallngesandfutureresearchdirections inthedevelopmentof polymer-based uranium extraction materials are thoroughly elucidated.
