Multifunctional Single-Molecule Catalysts for Ring-Opening Polymerization and Copolymerization of Lactide

Abstract:Polylacticacid (PLA)and its copolymers represent a critical direction in the development of sustainable polymeric materials.Inrecent years,a novel classof single-molecule multifunctionalcatalysts has emerged inthe fieldof PLA synthesis.Thesecatalysts utilize supramolecular interactions such as hydrogen bondingandorganic coordination to activatelactide and stabilizethe growing chainend,thereby exhibitinga synergisticenhancement in both catalytic activity andselectivity.Compared to metal-basedcatalysts,theyofferadvantagessuchaslowtoxicityandlowcost.Whencompared to multicomponentorganiccatalysts,theydemonstratesuperiorpolymerizationcontrollabilityandenhanced selectivity.This reviewsummarizesseveralrepresentativesingle-molecule bifunctionalcatalysts,including hydrogen-bonding-basedorganic bifunctionalcatalysts,trifunctional organiccatalysts,andalkali metalion-basedcatalyststhatintegrate hydrogen-bonding efects and initiation functions within a single molecule,along with theircharacteristics in catalyzing thering-opening polymerization oflactide andblock copolymerization are discussed.Thisreview proposes that future research should focus on developing single-molecule multifunctionalcatalyst systems that balance highcatalyticactivity with stereoselectivity, systematically elucidating the structure-activityrelationshipsand unique mechanisms of this class of catalysts from the perspective of supramolecular interactions.
