Abstract:Polyvinylchloride (PVC)gel isaclassof polymers that isable tocontract,bend,or expand underanapplied voltage.PVCgelfaturesafastresponse,lowcost,light weight,andhighelectromechanicalefficiency,makingitapromising candidate for artificial muscles.This paperreviewsrecent progress onPVCgelincluding itscompositions,modifications, fabrication technologies,design of novel configurations,andapplications.This paper emphasizes the improvementof electromechanical performance of PVC gel through doping with functional aditives,as well as rapid manufacturing techniquessuchas3Dprinting andthermalmelt procesing.BasedontheconventionalconfigurationsofPVCgelactuators employinganode-crawlingmechanism,twonovel deformationmodesofPVCgel,namely electrostatic modeand electrohydraulic mode,arediscussed indetail.Moreover,theapplicationsofVCgel insoftactuation,aswellasinmdical andoptical fields,aresystematicallyreviewed.Finallythecurent challnges andfuturedevelopment trends facing PVCgel are discussed.
