The influence of curing defects on the shear properties of carbon fiber plain weave composites

Abstract In order to analyze the mechanism and influencing factors of curing defects (e.g.dry fibers and resin bubbles) in carbon fiber composites,three different defect ratios of carbon fiber plain weave composites(CFPWC) were prepared by controlling the resin infiltration time (2,4,6 h) in the curing process.A shear model for CFPWC with random pore defects was proposed and established. The results show that the defect distribution of CFPWC is mainly concentrated in the resin area,and the overall mechanical properties are improved with the increase of infiltration time in the curing process.This is manifested in the shear strength and modulus of the composites being 77.1% and 85.6% of the maximum infiltration time (6h )at the minimum infiltration time ( 2h) . At the same time,the defective carbon fiber unit cell shear model established can fit well with experimental results,providing a more convenient unit cell model prediction mode for the prediction of CFPWC mechanical properties..
