The Correlation between Full-Touch Screen Infotainment System ResponseSpeedandCar-FollowingSafetyRisk

【Abstract】To investigate the impact offul-touch screen infotainment system response speedoncar-following safety, thispaperconductshuman-machineinteractionexperimentsusingrealcar-folowingvideosinanin-vehiclecockpitsimulator. Dataarecolectedfrom25participantsunder2vehiclespeedsand3responsespeedconditions duringboth staticanddyamic car-followingscenarios.Thevisual distractiondataareanalyzedtorevealcorrelations betweensystemresponse speedandcarfollowing safetyrisks.Resultsdemonstratethatasresponse time increases fromOto8Oms,the Total Time SpentonScreen (TTS),Glance-to-ScreenCount (GSC),and SingleOperationTime (SOT)exhibit nonlineargraduallygrowth withdecelerating rates.Specifically,at8Okm/h,whenresponse time increases fromOto40ms,theTTS,GSC,andSOTincreaseby7.83 % 19.74%,and28.72%respectively,while thesmalerincrementsof10.97%,12.89%,and18.06%.When precedingvehicles braked at a3s time headway,the minimum following distance decreasesby14.5 m( 80km/h )and12.78m ( 100km/h )as response time extends from O to 800ms .Simulation results across 3 time headway levels confirm that slower system response significantlyincreasesbothcolisionprobabilityandseverity.Thesefindingsprovidetheoreticalfoundations fordesigningsafer full-touch HMI systems,highlighting the critical role ofoptimizing response speed in mitigating driving risks.
