The Protection and Restoration ofLaitan Erfo

Abstract： The cliff-carving statues at Laitan Erfo Temple in Hechuan， Chongqing is a major historical and cultural site protected at the national level. Due to both human and natural damages， large areas of the gilding and polychrome surface of the two main Buddha statues have fallen off， requiring conservation interventions. Archaeological work was carried out before formal implementation of the conservation work，and continued in parallel with the restoration work until completion. In this way，the pre-intervention documented conditions and newly discovered information from archaeological investigations all served as basis for the implementation of the restoration project. To ensure quality conservation work and satisfying visual effect of the restoration， we did some simulation experiments before covering the statues with gold foil， and asked the general public for evaluations of the four simulation samples. The construction process remained open to the public，and their suggestions on the restoration effects were adopted.Public participation is a principal approach to interpretation of the Laitan Erfo，and also the key to ensure successfulimplementationofthe project.
