Abstract Objective:To explore the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and the risk of constipation in children and to provide a reference for relevant clinical decisions. Methods: Cohort studies,case-control studies, and cross-sectional studies on the correlation between BMI and the risk of constipation in children published in China and abroad were retrieved from EMbase,PubMed,the Cochrane Library,Web of Science,WanFang Database,Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM),China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI),and VIP Database from the establishment of the database to March 1,2023. Two researchers independently screened the literature according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, extracted data, and evaluated the risk of bias in the included studies. Stata 17.0 software was used to conduct a Meta-analysis.Results:A total of 4 case-control studies and 6 cross-sectional studies were included, involving 5 796 research subjects. Meta-analysis results showed that being overweight (OR=1.54,95%CI 1.25-1.90),obesity (OR=2.45,95%CI 1.96-3.05),and overweight/obesity will increase the risk of constipation in children (OR=1.90,95%CI 1.64-2.20). Publication bias assessment showed that the results of this study were stable and reliable. Conclusion:Existing evidence shows that BMI is associated with constipation in children. Overweight/obesity may be a risk factor for constipation in children. However, due to limitations in the number and types of studies included, the research results still need to be conducted with large samples,multi-centered,and high-quality prospective cohort studies for further verification.
