Abstract:Objective :To clarify the association between daily housework and mortality risk in the Chinese elderly, and explore how gender and moderating effects play a regulating role in this process. Methods :Data from 16 O64 participants aged 65 years and over from the 2002-2018 CLHLS were analyzed. The association and mechanism between daily housework and mortality risk in elderly were examined using proportional risk regression modeling and structural equation modeling, controlling for older adults‘ physical mortality risk at the time of the baseline survey. Results : (1) Engaging in daily housework helped to reduce the mortality risk of the elderly in China ( HR=0.864 );(2) At present, the association of daily housework on the mortality risk has gender differences, specifically showing that the effect of housework on reducing the mortality risk of elderly women ( HR=0.444 ) is stronger than male elderly ( HR= 0.804);(3) Living arrangements have a moderating effect on the mortality risk of daily housework on the basis of gender. Conclusions:Engaging in daily housework helps to reduce the mortality risk among Chinese elderly, and housework is more effective in reducing the mortality risk among older women than among older men. Moreover, living arrangements also plays a significant moderating role on the basis of gender, which helps to clarify the pathways through which housework affects mortality risk in the elderly.
