Abstract:The penetration depthof the eart-penetrating projectileis a basic problem in the design ofprotection engieering. Scaled testing isan important method to studythe penetration law.Thesizeefect betweenthemodeltestresultsand the prototype is a problem that must be solved to establishthe calculation method of penetration using scaled tests. In this study, the stressand strainstate evolutionoftherock-liketargetmediumsubjectedtothepenetrationofearth-penetrating projectiles andthe penetration resistance function of the projectiles were derived using cavity expansion theory.The formula for the calibercoeficientcharacterizing thesizeeffect wasobtained,andasimplifiedaalysisof thenose shapecoeffcientand caliber coeficient was conducted using curve fting and Taylor expansion within the penetration velocity range of the conventional earth-penetrating weapons.A practical calculation formula forthe penetration depthofconventional earthpenetrating weapons intorock-likemedia was proposed,whosecoefficientscanbedirectlydeterminedbyparametersoftarget and projectiles.Theresults showthat the main influencing factorofthe projectile's penetrationresistance is theimpedanceof thetarget.Thesourceofthesizeefectisoriginatedfromthefactthattherangesofthetarget damagezonesdonotsatisfythe geometric similaritylaw.The nose shapecoeficientcanbe simplified intoalinear functionof the projectile's aspectratio,and thenoseshapecoeicientofaflat-nosedprojectileis 0.57.Thcalibercoeicientoftheprojectileisdeterminedbytheatioof thecavityradiusofthepenetrationtotheradiusofthefracturezoneandcanbetakenas1.2-1.4forconventional earthpenetrating weapons.The theoretical calculation formula of penetrationdepth is ingood agreement with experimentalresults, and thus,has high reliability.
