Fusion of mesoscale eddy data for the South China Sea

Abstract: Mesoscale edies areubiquitous in the ocean and playakeyrole in the transport of oceanic energyand matter. Current observation methods for mesoscaleeddies includesateliteremotesensing,buoy tracking,and research vessel surveys.Each of these methodsofer sdistinct scales and perspectives,resulting in varying mesoscale information standards and characteristics.Based onthree mesoscale eddy datasets obtained using diferent methods,this study proposesatwo-stage fusion strategy to generatea fused mesoscale eddy dataset for the South China Sea.Moreover,it analyzes the spatial distributionof mesoscaleeddycenters in the South China Seafrom 2014to2018.Results revealthat the fuseddataset efectivelymitigatesissues suchasoveridentification,omission,and misidentificationfoundinsingle-source observations.Additionaly,thefused datasetaccuratelyreflects the widespread spatialdistributionof mesoscaleeddies in the South ChinaSea,thesubstantialocalaggregationofcyclonicandanticycloniceddies,andclearparitioning between cyclonicandanticycloniceddies.Furthermore,the fused dataset forthe Southcan oferreliable data support for studies relatedtotrajectorytrackingof mesoscaleedies,inferringtheirthree-dimensional structures,andunderstanding mesoscale oceanic phenomena and circulation.
