Three-dimensional finite element analysis of different pontic designs in the extraction area of clearaligners during the distalization of canine

Abstract:ObjectiveTo explore theeffectof different ponticdesigns inresisting stress interruption effectandroller coasterphenomenon through three-dimensional finiteelementanalysis,providingclinicalguidance fortheapplicationof clearaligners inextractioncases.MethodsFourthree-dimensionalfiniteelement modelsof diferentponticdesigns inthe extractionareaofclearalignerswereestablished,including thepontic-freeconnectiondesign,theconventionalhollowpontic design,the partiallysolid-filledpontic designandthefullysolid-flled ponticdesign.Allfouraligner modelswere individuallyassembledwith thedentalarch model.AO.2mmdistal movementof thecanine wassimulated toobserve the initialdisplacementandperiodontal ligamentstressdistributionof canineandsecond premolar ineach groupof models. ResultsThe initial displacement tendencydiagramrevealed that inall experimental conditions,both thecanineand second premolarexhibitedtippingmovementpaterns.However,significantvariationsininitialdisplacement magnitudes wereobservedacross different ponticdesigns.The fullysolid-filld pontic-connected clearaligner model exhibited the greatest initialdisplacementvalues(bothcrownandroot)and themaximuminitial displacement magnitude.Notably,this kind of designdisplayed movement characteristicscloser tobodily movement,indicatingsuperiorcontrol eficacyintooth positioning.Periodontal ligament stressanalysisrevealed thatthefullysolid-flled pontic-connected clear alignermodel generatedthe highest maximumprincipal stress intheperiodontal ligament.ConclusionThis three-dimensional finite elementstudyreveals thattheapplicationofsolid-filledpontic inclearalignertherapycould improve biomechanicalcontrol atextractionsitesbyminimizingalignerdistortion,reducing stress interruptionefectandpreventing therolercoaster
phenomenon.
