Thermal Characteristic Analysis of 252kV Eco-Friendly GIS Switch in Dry Air Medium

Abstract: To address the issues of high global warming potential associated with the prevalent use of SF6 gas as the insulating medium in conventional gas-insulated switchgear (GIS),as well as the overheating problems and thermal stability concerns caused by compact structure and limited heat disipation area, dry air is proposed as an alternative insulating medium to replace SF6 .A thermal characteristic study was conducted on a 252kV three-position GIS switch. Steady-state thermal analysis of the three-position switch was achieved through electro-thermalfluid multiphysics coupling,and the temperature field distribution of the switch was obtained. The accuracy of the simulation model was verified by comparing the simulation results with temperature rise test data. Based on the established model, the influence of gas pressure and contact resistance on the temperature field distribution of the three-position switch was further analyzed. The temperature rise decreases most significantly when the gas pressure is increased to
0.7MPa . By comparing the temperature rise of the GIS three-position switch in dry air and SF6 under different gas pressures,it was found that when the dry air pressure is about three times that of SF6 ,the temperature rise of the switch is essentially the same. This study provides a reference for the analysis and design of eco-friendly three-position GIS switches
