Beamforming and power control for active RIS-enabled networks

Abstract:To mitigatethesevere path losscaused bymultiplicative fading in passve RIS-assisted systems,this paper proposedalow-complexity,energy-effcientjointoptimization scheme formulti-usercommunications withactive RIS.The scheme aimed to maximizethe weighted sumrate(WSR)undertransmit power constraints atboth thebase stationandtheRIS.Byleveragingfractionalprogramming(FP),theoriginalnon-convexproblemwastransformedintoaseriesof tractablesubproblems.Ablock coordinate descent(BCD)framework solved these subproblems by alternatelyoptimizing the BSbeamforming and RISreflectionmatrices.Toupdate theRIS reflectionmatrix,thealgorithmadoptedamajorization-minimization(MM)aproach to constructa closed-form surrogate lower bound,simplifyingtheoptimization processto matrix-vectormultiplications andprojectionoperations.Compared to CVX-based methods,,the proposed algorithmreducedthecomputationalcomplexityby approximately O(N1.5) and outperformed binary search methods in convergence and performance at similar complexity.Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves WSR by 27.67% at 15dBm ,and achieves similar performance with only 5 dBm,reducing energy consumption by about 10dB ,making it well suited for rapid deployment in large-scale RIS systems.
