Interfacial and Flow Properties of Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquid Modified Highly Filled MH/LLDPE Flame Retardant Composites

Abstract:Toaddress thechallengesofpoorflowabilitydiicult procesabilityanddeterioratedmechanicalproprtiein highlyfilled polymercomposites,asimpleandcost-efective modificationstrategyisproposedbythedirectincoporationof an ionic liquid (IL)with excellent flowability.An ionic liquid,1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium phosphate (BMM]PA), was synthesized bya two-step method. A series of highly filled magnesium hydroxide (MH)/linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) composites (with a mass ratio of MH to LLDPE of 60:40)containing various amounts of [BMIM]PA were then preparedby melt blending.The investigation of their procesing,rheological, mechanical and flameretardant properties revealed that theprocessng properties and impact toughness were significantly improved with the introductionof [BMIM]PA, while maintaining theflame retardant properties of the composites.Notably,when the aditionof[BMIM]PA was 5% (mass ratio of [BMIM]PA to MH and LLDPE), the equilibrium torque was reduced by 9.7% , the melt flow index was increased by 119% ,and impact toughness was increased by 69% . These improvements are attributed to the enhanced dispersion of[BMIM]PAonMHinthematrixanditsgood lubricating effect.Thisstudyprovidesanewidea for the application of IL in highly filled polymer composites.
