Analysis of the Influence of Recycled Fibers on the Mechanical Properties of Recycled Paper Based on Grey Relational Analysis

Abstract:This paper conducted three recycling processes for US old corrugated container(OCC) 12# and 13# to investigate the variations in the properties of recycled fibers and the mechanical strength of recycled paper as well as the correlation between them. The results showed that US OCC 12# recycled fibers were thicker and longer than US OCC 13# ,with higher proportion of fine fibers,and more extensive damage. After three recycling cycles,the fiber length-weighted average of US OCC 12# and US OCC 13# recycled fibers decreased by 10. 8% and 15. 7%,respective‐ ly,while their splitting length ratio increased by 11.2% and 2.3% ,respectively. Fiber twisting and bending decreased,whereas fiber breakage increased. The fine fibers content of US OCC 13# recycled fibers progressively decreased,while that of US OCC 12# recycled fibers initially in‐ creased and then declined. Following three recycling processes,both recycled paper exhibited reductions in tensile index( 12# : 21.4% , 13# : 10.7% )and burst index( 12# : 10.2% , 13# : 2.6% ),while their folding endurance increased by 25.6% and 3.2% ,respectively. The tear in‐ dex of US OCC 12# recycled paper increased,whereas that of US OCC 13# recycled paper decreased. Overall,the mechanical strength of US OCC 12# recycled paper was generally better than that of US OCC 13# . Grey relational analysis showed that the proportions of short fibers,fine fi‐ bers,and twisted fibers were the key factors affecting paper mechanical strength,primarily acting on fiber bonding interactions.
