Frozen Planet II Revisits The Arctic And Antarctic
Penguins, polar bears and amazing over-head photography can only mean one thing thesecond season of BBC’s documentary FrozenPlanet is finally here!
In this follow-up to 2011’s Frozen Planet,the new six- part series called Frozen Planet IIrevisits the Arctic and Antarctic. It also gives aview into the secret wildlife dramas that playout in all the world’s coldest areas, such ashigh mountains and frozen deserts.
It took the team over three years to makevideos of Siberian tigers in Russia walkingover great distances to hunt for black bears. InChina’s Wolong National Nature Reserve, theteam brought to light giant pandas doing hand-stands to mark their scent.
While there are lighter moments, the ever-changing frozen planet is a central theme of thedocumentary. Mark Brownlow, the series’exec-utive producer, points out that Frozen Planet IIis not just about capturing nice footage, but al-so “drawing attention to changes going onnow”.
The series shows the great challengescaused by climate change that many polar ani-mals now face. For example, pups of harp sealsin the Arctic Ocean rely on sea ice for the firstsix weeks of life. However, the sea ice of todaymelts and breaks up sooner in spring. As a re-sult, groups of seal pups fall off the ice into theocean before they have learned how to swim.Meanwhile, chinstrap penguin chicks use their
