Abstract:The middleand lower reaches of the Yangtze River are among China's most economicallydeveloped regions,caracterizedbyabundant precipitationand asteady water flow.However,a serious imbalance exists between Waterresource availability and regional economic development.Nantong City,located on the northern bank of the YangtzeRiver estuary,exemplifies this issue,facing persistent surface water shortages and heavy reliance on groundwater extraction.To support more rationaland scientific wateruse,this study asesses the sustainabilityof waterresources inNantongusing the ecological fotprint method from 2Ol2to 2O2l.Theresults indicate thattheoveral ecological footprintof waterresources inNantong hasremainedrelativelystable,yetsignificantdisparitiesexistacross districts,primarilydueto variations in industrial structure.Theecological carryingcapacityand waterresourceload indexfluctuate substantially,with consistent trendsacros regions thatcorrelate positivelyornegativelywithaverage precipitation.Thissuggeststhat increased rainfall improves ecologicalcarryingcapacitywhile easing water stres.Aditionally,the waterresourceecological footprintperlOooOyuanofGDPshows acleardownwardtrend,reflectingimproving efficiencyinwater use.However,Nantong has remained inan ecological water deficit overthe long term, highlighting the need for effective measures to reverse this trend.
