Investigation on Effects of Length-Width Ratio of Elliptic Cylindrical Shell on Grinding Efficiency of Ball Mill Using DEM Simulation

Abstract ∵ Targeting on AG mill with diameter of ϕ1000mm ,avalidated DEM model is employed for simulating charge motion of particles inside a ballmill with a cylindrical shellinoval cross section with respect tofive diferent length-width ratios and eight different rotating speeds of mill.The DEM results show that movement pattern of particles during charge motion is repeated twice in every revolution of elliptically shaped mill.In each period of movement pattern,most particles falldown inhigh velocityand strike withthe particles at toe Zone, when the long axis of mill rotates from the position of 0∘ to 90∘ .As the long axis of mill rotates from the position of 135∘ to 180∘ ,a majority of particles climb from toe zone,and some others at shoulder zone roll down in low velocity.Number ofcollisions at high energy among particles inside elliptically shaped mill with length-width ratioof1.5:1islarger than thosewiththe other fourlength-width ratios,so themill with length-width ratio of1.5:1has themost effctive grinding efficiency.Fortheeliptically shaped mill with length-width ratio of 1.5:1,peaks of spectrum images ofnumber ofcolisions at high energyamong particles are at 70%80% of critical speed of revolution of mill.Therefore,the optimum speed of mill with length-width ratio of1.5:1is between 70% and 80% of its critical speed of revolution.
