Abstract:Inorder to studythe deformationcharacteristics of thin-walled ellpsoidal shells under localized impact loading, experimental investigationsandnumerical simulationswereconducted.The global deformationcharacteristics,centraldent depthaddentboundaryof therecoveryellipsoidalshellimpactedbycylindrical projectilesatdiferentvelocitieswere obtained by projectile impact testson a light gas gun apparatusandthree-dimensional digital imagecorrelatio (DIC) technologyfordeformation processrecord.Thesimulationanalysis focusedonthe effectsof three diferent curvatureradiion the depression depth and the lengths of the major and minor axes of theelipsoidal shell.Theprimary dimensionless independentvariablesonwhich the dimensionlessdeformationcharacteristics dependweredetermined bymeansof dimensional analysis.Theinfluence of lesssignificant parameters was reduced through parameter sensitivity analysis.Under theconditionofmaintaingconsistentsalingatiosformateralproperties,projectiledimensions,ndshelltckess,peific response surface function expressonsbetween dimensionlessdeformationcharacteristics vs.three curvature radiiandvelocity parameters were derived.Aformula for predicting global deformation based on the depth of thedepressionand the depression boundary was proposed.The established expression can well describethesize effect and has ahigh predictionaccuracy,and can provide reference for the design of impact load protection oflarge-sized curved thin shels in engineering.
