Abstract:The German poetand thinker Goethe's inquiry into the questionof the human Here-Being (Dasein) consistentlypermeates his poeticsonanontologicallevel.Heneither identifiedwiththeexclusivityanduniquenessof the monotheistic Catholic traditionsince the Middle Ages, nor did heembrace the humanismof the European Enlightenment from the seventeenth centuryonward, which elevated manto thepositionoftheLordand, through the proces ofCivilisation, destroyed thenaturalorder to establishahumanisticone.Due to Goethe's unparalld position in the German cultural circle, his poetics has been appropriated by these two trends throughout its long reception history. Consequentlyinterpretationsofhisworks have long beencharacterized byinstrumentalization, fragmentation, and one-sidednessPerhaps as aresult of Chinese modern history, the reception ofboth Goetheand his play Faust in the Chinese worldhas been predominantly framed through theconcept of "self-strengthening".This paper interprets Goethe's fundamental poeticideas through the integrityof Qianand KuninTheBook ofChanges.Thisapproach is grounded intheontological afinity betweenGoethe’spoetics andthe traditional Chinese ideal ofacting in harmony with Heaven and in response to the times.
