Chain Extension Modification of Biodegradable Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)

Abstract:By melt blending of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)(PBAT)and styrene-glycidyl methacrylate (ADR), a series of biodegradable materials (PBAT/ADR) were prepared through a twin-screw extruder.The efects of ADRon the melt flowrate,carboxylend groupcontent,gelcontent,thermal properties,rheological propertiesand mechanical propertiesof PBATat different blending temperatures were investigated.The results showed that the melt flowrate of the polymer PBAT/ADR decreased significantly with the increase of ADR content. When the mass ratio of ADR to PBAT was 1.8:100 0 the melt flowratemet the industrial productionrequirements.Inadition,withtheincreaseof temperature,the terminal carboxylcontentofPBAT/ADR decreased significantly,whilethegelcontent increasedsignficantlywhich provedthatthe crosslinking reactionbetween PBATand ADRoccurred and the branched macromolecularstructure was formed.With the increaseof temperature,thecrystalizationtemperatureofPBAT/ADR decreased slightly,andthe glasstransition temperature andthermaldecompositiontemperature increased.TheviscoelasticityofPBATwassignificantlyenhancedafter theaddition of ADR.The branched cross-linked structure was formed inside.The processng performance was changed. Compared with pure PBAT, te tensile strength of PBAT/ADR increased and the elongation at break increased significantly.The maximum tensile strength was 19.2MPa and the elongation at breakwas 1036.3%
