A Study on Preparation of Composite Hydrogels Constructed by Microgels and Adsorption Properties for Heavy Metal Ions

Abstract: To enhance the response rate and adsorption performance of hydrogels,an emulsion polymerization method was employed to construct a chitosan -based interpenetrating network microgel system.Chitosan (CS),acrylamide (AM),and acrylic acid (AA) were used as functional monomers, N,Nmethylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as the cross-linking agent,sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as the emulsifier, and potassium persulfate (KPS)as the initiator.Polymerization was completed under a constant temperature of 70‰ .The obtained microgel was used as a three-dimensional network skeleton,and AA/AM monomers were introduced through secondary cross-linking, successfully preparing the P(AA-AM)CS/P(AA-AM) composite hydrogel.The chemical structure and surface morphology of the composite hydrogels were characterized by FTIR and SEM respectively.The swelling and adsorption properties of composite hydrogelswere tested by weighing method.The results showed that theresponse rate of hydrogel was improved by adding microgel,and the equilibrium time was about 25 min.The effects of adsorption time, pH,ion concentration and dosage of adsorbent on Pb2+ adsorption were investigated.The results show that when the adsorption time is 25min,the ion concentration is 20mg/L ,the pH is6,and the adsorbent dosage is 50 mg/mL, the removal rate of Pb2+ reaches 88% . Isothermal adsorption modeling indicated that the Langmuir equation R2=0.987 )provided a better fit than the Freundlich equation( R2=0.944 ) confirming monolayer adsorption dominance.The pseudo-second-order kinetic model ( Rz =0.998) indicates that chemical adsorptionis dominant,and the interaction between heavy metal ions and the composite hydrogel mainly occurs through ion exchange, coordination,and other mechanisms.
