Effects of Exogenous Melatonin on Growth and Physiological Characteristics of Wheat Seedlings Under Chromium Stress

Abstract: To elucidate the mechanism by which exogenous melatonin modulates the growth and physiological characteristics of wheat seedlings under chromium stress,a hydroponic experiment was conducted using two wheat cultivars,Shangmai 5226and Xiaoyan15.Thestudyaimed toinvestigate theefectsof different exogenous melatonin concentrations (0,50,100 ,and 1 00O μmol/L) under varying Cr stress conditions ( 100μmol/L and 160μmol/l ). The results showed that under both 100μmol/L and 160μmol/L chromium stress, the seeding length,root length,soluble sugar content,andproline contentof the seedlings increased initiallyand then decreased with rising melatonin concentrations,while the MDA content declined.Overall,the effct of melatonin is characterized by "low promotion and high inhibition".Exogenous melatonin at 5 can effectively alleviate the Cr stress of 100μmol/L and 160μmol/L on the seedlings of Shangmai 5226 and Xiaoyan15.The finding of this study are expected to provide theoretical references for the prevention and control of chromium pollution in farmland and the cultivation of wheat under stress conditions.
