Evaluation of Resistance Levels of Echinochloa Weeds to Eight Commonly Used Herbicides in Five Major Rice - Producing Regions of China

Abstract:To systematicall evaluate resistance characteristics of Echinochloa weeds populations in China's five major rice- producing regions.In2022,a total of18 Echinochloa weedspopulations werecolected from the Northeast, Northwest,Midle-Lower Yangtze Plain,Southwest,and South Chinaregions.Whole-plant bioassayswere conducted todetermine theirresistancelevels toeightcommonlyused herbicides with five diffrent modesof action: clomazone,oxaziclomefone,penoxsulam,pyribenzoxim,metamifop,cyhalofopbutyl,quincloracandpropanil.Results showed that Echinochloa weeds populations in the Northeastregion exhibited medium resistance to penoxsulam, pyribenzoximand quinclorac,butremainedsensitive toallother tested herbicides.PopulationsintheNorthwest exhibitedsensitivityorlowresistance toalltestedherbicides.Populations in the Middle-LowerYangtzePlainshowed lowto medium resistance to oxaziclomefone,clomazone and quinclorac,medium to high resistance to cyhalofopbutyl, metamifop,andpropanil,but were sensitive to penoxsulam,pyribenzoxim.Populationsinthe SouthwestandSouth regions displayed mediumresistance to cyhalofopbutyl,metamifop,and propanil,and showed noresistanceoronly low resistance to theremaining herbicides.A clear northtosouth increasing risk patern of Echinochloa weeds resistance was observedacross China.Inconclusion,management strategies must beadaptedto localconditions.Innorthernregions, the focusshould beon“prevention”through croprotationand pre emergence applicationsto protect herbicide sensitivity.In southernregions,the emphasis should shift to“control”using rotational mixingand integrated measures to control the development of multiple resistance.
