Influence of Track Gradient on Heavy-Haul Group Train Tracking Interval

Abstract ∵ Heavy-haul train platooning operation represents an effective approach to significantly reduce train tracking intervals and substantially enhance railway transport efciency.To investigate the impact of track gradients on train platoon headway intervals,this study developed a speed profile optimization model based on particle swarm optimization algorithm. The model aims to achieve minimum platoon headway while maintaining autonomous colision avoidance capability. The model was implemented in MATLAB environment for simulation analysis,determining optimal speed profiles for train platoons under diferent track gradients,which can satisfy both colision avoidance and minimum headway requirements.The analysis evaluated platoon interval control performance through three dimensions—average headway interval, maximum headway interval, and departure time interval. Results demonstrate that when operating with the optimized speed profiles obtained through this method, the average headway interval, maximum headway interval, and departure time interval of train platoons exhibit an approximately exponential growth trend with increasing track gradients.When track gradientsremain below 9‰ ,train platoons can achieve satisfactory tracking performance.However,at a 12‰ (20 gradient, the average headway interval reaches 921.3m ,maximum headway interval extends to 1959.3m ,and departure time interval increases to 321s. , indicating significantly compromised platooning efficiency.
