Summary of the best evidence for the management of functional constipation in elderly inpatients

Abstract Objective：To retrieve and summarize the best evidence for the prevention and management of constipation in elderly inpatients during hospitalization，so as to provide a reference for the clinical management of constipation in elderly inpatients.Methods：Based on the "6S" model，relevant evidence on constipation prevention and management of the elderly was retrieved from domestic and foreign databases and professional websites，including clinical decision-making，guidelines，recommended practices，and systematic reviews.The retrieval time was from January 1，2012 to June 30，2022，and the literature quality was evaluated by four researchers.Results：A total of 11 articles were included，including 3 guidelines，4 systematic reviews，3 clinical decisions，and 1 recommended practice.A total of 31 pieces of evidence were summarized from 6 aspects，including evaluation and diagnosis of elderly constipation，health guidance，medication management，medication monitoring，adjuvant therapy，and policy recommendations.Conclusion：This study obtains 31 pieces of evidence for the prevention and management of constipation in elderly patients based on evidence-based methods，so as to provide evidence-based basis for clinical medical workers to manage hospitalized elderly patients with constipation.
