This essay focuses on the design of piled hills and placed stones in Qiuxia Pu, a Chinese traditional garden located in Jiading district. Firstly, it reviews the history of the garden and emphasizes its value. Then based on clarifying the difference between piling hills and placing stones, it begins to analyze their characteristics. Piling hills is full of artfulness and naturalness, which reflects on its material and layout. When talking about placing stones, there are two kinds of stones. One is for the sake of imitating nature, another is just for appreciating. Through the following study, it may help us know the characteristics and cultural aesthetics of garden building in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties.
