Study on failure zones and attenuation law of stress waves in concrete induced by cylindrical charge explosion

Abstract:Inblast-resistantstructraldesignforconventional weapos,previoussudiesonblas-iducedstresswaves nsolid media have predominantly focusedonsoilandrockmedia(i.e.,groundshock isues),whereas researchonthe propagationand atenuation lawsof stresswaves inconcrete remains relativelylimited.Based onthe Karagozian and Case concrete(KCC) constitutive model in conjunction with the multi-material ALE(MMALE)algorithm, the propagation laws of stress waves in concrete induced bycylindrical chargeexplosion were numericallyinvestigated.Firstly,the applicabilityofthecostitutive modelparameters andnumerical algorithm were validatedbycomparing theresults with theexisting experiments. Subsequently,thepeak stresswas employed asacriterion todelineate theexplosive damage zones in theconcrete surrounding thecharge.Aditionally,theatenuationlawsofexplosionstress waves ineachdamagezone were disussed.Finallyteefect ofburialdepthwastakenintofurtherconsidered,andaformulaforcalculatingthepeak stressinconcreteinduced by cylindrical chargeexplosion was established.It was foundthattheattenuation patesof blast-induced stresswaves differ significantlyineach explosion failure zone.Thestress wavesin the near-field zone(quasi-fluid and crushing zones) demonstrates amorerapid atenuationrate compared tothat inthe mid-field zone (transition and fracture zones).Furthermore, an increase intheaspectratioof thecylindricalchargeleads toanaccelerationintheatenuationof thenormal peak stre. Moreover,theestablished formula forcalculating the peak stressof blast-induced stresswaves enablesaccurateandrapid determinationofthe normal peak stressgenerated bycylindricalcharges withvaryinggeometries andburialdepths,whichcan be served as a valuable reference for blast-resistant design of concrete structures.
