Gen Z’s Love forAnimal Helps Pet Business Grow z世代年轻人对动物的喜爱有助于宠物行业的发展

Wang Jingqi brings one of her dogs to her newly opened pet store in Beijingevery day. The 28-year-old is the cofounder2 of two pet stores and she has six cutedogs. Her story with her dog friends began in 2015, when she set out to study in theUnited States with her first dog. After her return China in 2020, she started her petbusiness with three partners.

According to the China Pet Industry Annual Report 2022, the number ofpets and pet owners in China continues to grow. Young people aged between 19and 30—Gen Zers are the main part of those who have pets. As more Gen Zersjoin the pet community, taking pets as members of a family is becoming atrend3, says the report.

Gen Zers are connected4 through social media5 more and more. They askabout pet products, information and post cute pet pictures on the Internet. They alsowant to take part in some face-to-face activities about pets. So they can share storiesand love for animals. The pets are excited to meet each other at her pet store’soffline pet parties.

The pet economy6 in China is projected7 to reach 592.8 billion yuan this year.Wang finds that younger pet owners like good products made in China better thanthose from other country. That is a great difference from what was ten years ago.Gen Z has shown a preference8 for green pet food and high-tech products, too.Wang and her team follow the trend and have made some products with someChinese characteristics9. One of their best-sellers are eco-friendly10 toys.
