Interest in AI has helped make moreteenagers than ever to take computing coursesat UK universities, a report has found. Thenumber of 18-year-olds asking to study computingfrom September 2023 grew by nearly10% from 2022 and 33% from 2021, said areport from the Universities and CollegesAdmissions Service (UCAS).

UCAS works on applications3 to study atuniversities and colleges in the UnitedKingdom. It said about 196,000 people askedto take UK computing courses in 2023,including 95,000 18-year-olds.

UCAS said interest in computing isgrowing as AI and gaming become morepopular. And new AI technologies, such as ChatGPT, are developed.

The British Computer Society (BCS) said computing is growing faster than anyother area of study. This is maybe because of the“high profile4 of AI”, and becausethese students can later find jobs in things like Internet security5 and climatechange, data science6, BCS said.

Teenagers in the UK know that AI will change the world forever. The thousandsof young men and women asking for computing through UCAS do so, because theywant a say in this future.
