In Praise of a Historical Study of Dunhuang Popular Culture

—Notes on The Knowledge and Thought of the People of Dunhuang

during the Tang and Song Dynasties

Abstract：This paper provides an overview of the recent study， The Knowledge and Thought of the People of Dunhuang during the Tang and Song Dynasties. The book addresses a clear topic with effective writing and comes to a reasonable and well-researched conclusion， for which reasons the author of this review considers it to be a masterpiece of historical interpretation for Dunhuang popular culture from the 8th to the 13th centuries. The overview elucidates the main ideas， philosophical basis and material evidence that underlie Dunhuang popular culture， as well as the historical role and societal meaning of a regional culture characterized by diverse and integrated faiths.
