A Textual Study on the Document“JusuoShi”in the Han Dynasty

Bamboo Slips from Xuanquan

Abstract：Shi are frequently found in historical records as models for official documents. Research on one of these documents in the form of a book formed by five Han dynasty bamboo slips from Xuanquan has been identified as a “jusuoshi” （a document used to record the crimes of prisoners）. This text is a model for administrative documents that was sent by a superior governmental department to local governments and relates to the absolution and imprisonment terms of prisoners. Study of the contents of this book provides researchers with valuable information about the management of administrative documents during the Han Dynasty， especially those related to the regularization and standardization of bureaucratic practices.
