Contact Properties the Universal Joint in Rotary Steering System

Abstract:With the rapid advancement petroleum exploration technology,moreand more complexstructure well types have appeared.To make up the shortfalls in conventional directional driling technology,the rotary steering driling technology hasemerged.Theuniversal joint in the dynamic point-the-bit rotary steering system bears alarge torque when working in harsh downhole environment,leading to the concentration contact stress,which willinduce structuralfailureand cause the problem driling reliability.Inthis study,taking the universal joint in the dynamic point-the-bit rotary steering system as an example,and considering the structural characteristics thechannel surface therzeppa constant-velocityuniversal joint,theinfluences diferent channel shapes and structural parameters on the contact stress universal joints were identified by combining finite element analysis and response surface methodology,and the finite element analysis method was verified by comparison.Then,the Box-Behnken design was used to systematicalyquantify the interactions multiple channel parameters,and a quadratic regresion model was constructed to explore the interactions curvature coeficient,sphere diameterand contact angle with the contact stress inner and outer rings.The optimization results showthat theeliptical channel has good curvature continuityand can be processed more easily,with the contact stress distribution being about 18% lower than that the circular arc channel. The optimal parameter combination can reduce the maximum contact stress the outer ring the universal joint to 554MPa ,which is about 31% (20 lower than the initial value.This confirmsthat a rational matching curvature coefficient and contact angle can remarkably improve the stressconcentration.The study reveals thequantitative relationship between channel parametersand stressdistribution,which provides a theoretical basis for the design high-loaduniversal joints and has certain guiding significance for improving the downhole working life rotary steering systems.
