Cai Yuanpei’s Former Residence

On January 11， 1868， the prosperous Cai family， situated in a small lane named after Wang Xizhi’s ink brush landing there， welcomed a new member. This was Cai Yuanpei. The house in Bifeilong （Flying Brush Lane）， which now serves as Cai Yuanpei’s former residence， was purchased by his grandfather Cai Tingzhen during the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty. It features a front gate courtyard design， which is very common in Shaoxing architecture.
