Meta-analysis of the Effects of Subsoiling Tillage on Crop Yield and Water Use Efficiency

Abstract: 【Objective】The problems of soil compaction and low water use eiciency caused by conventional plowing and rotary tillage are becoming increasingly severe. Subsoiling tillage serves as a crucial agricultural measure for conserving farmland,enhancing crop yield,and improving water use eficiency. However,in previous studies,the effects of subsoiling tillage on crop yield increase and water use efficiency improvement varied under different experimental factors. This paper aimed to explore the impact of subsoiling tillage on yield of different crops and soil water use efficiency(WUE),providing a theoretical basis for promotion and application of this tillage method.【Method】 Two types of crops,wheat and maize,which grown in China were selected as research objects,relevant literature published by researchers was searched,and 266 sets of data from 56 eligible articles were screened.The effects of subsoiling tillage on yield and water use efficiency of the two crops were explored through meta-analysis. 【Result】 Under subsoiling tillage, both crop yield and water use efficiency were significantly improved,especially for wheat,the yieldwas increased by 11.7% compared to conventional tillage,and water use efficiency was increased by 11.9% compared to conventional tillage.However,continuous subsoiling tillage did not achieve a sustained yield increase effect.Inarid and semi-arid regions(rainfall ⩽400mm ),subsoiling tillage had a significant effect on increasing crop yield,the crop productivity was increased by 10% . In the regions with more rainfall, subsoiling could better improve the utilization of natural precipitation.【Conclusion】 Subsoiling tillage can enhance crop productivity and water use eficiency, and the effect on wheat is better than on maize;a better effect on crop yield increase can be achieved in arid and semi-arid regions.
