English has long expanded its vocabulary by adopting so-caled “loan words" from other languages. Among these， some words originate from Chinese. While they come from various regions of the country， most of these Chinese-originated words have a pronunciation that is heavily influenced by Cantonese and Hokkien， largely due to the maritime trade between port cities in Guangdong and Fujian Provinces starting in the Tang Dynasty （618-907）.
