A new branch of the Palace Museum has been built since December 30th, 2022. The new northern branch will be an addition to the national museum in the Forbidden City in Beijing. The whole building area of the new branch is over 100,000 square meters. The work is expected to be completed in 2025, in time to mark the 100th anniversary of the Palace Museum.

It lies in a village in Haidian Area about 30 km from the main museum. The new branch is designed to house 12 halls. Its style will mix the original style of the Palace Museum with modern design.

The Palace Museum now has over 1.86 million cultural relics in its collection. However, only about 10,000 pieces are shown every year, because there is not enough space. The new museum will offer more space to show those valuable relics in public. What’s more, a lot of modern technologies will be used to protect relics better. For example, some cultural relics like paintings, can only be shown seasonally. They can’t be shown during the rainy season, in winter or summer, because these works have high temperature requirement. Many cotton relics also cannot be shown because of environment conditions. So, it’s necessary to build a modern museum to avoid the damage of the relics.

The new branch of the Palace Museum will not only be a modern exhibition space, but also provide relic protection, repair work and visitor services.
