Application of Seismic Scattering Technique in the Detection of Bridge PileFoundation Sites

Abstract: [Purposes] This study aims to identify the presence of unfavorable geological bodies such as goafs,fractures,and karst caves near pile foundations 0# to 8# of Bridge S in a project in Shanxi Province,and to evaluate their impact on the safety of the pile foundation engineering.[Methods] The seismic scattering technique (SSP) was employed to conduct engineering geophysical exploration in the study area.The methodology and its application were introduced,and the fault zones and karst development areasbeneath the bridge pile foundation site were delineatedand interpreted.[Findings]The findings indicate that the seismic scattering technique efectively identified major unfavorable engineering geological issues within the bridge site,including the distribution and genesis of low-velocity loose rock and soil, the extentoffault zones,the development ofkarst,and their implications for the stabilityof the engineering site.[Conclusions] The research results provide a technical basis for subsequent exploration work.
