AbstractThe Chongtailu is a kind of high-headed shoe that women in the Tang dynasty liked to wear. The two characters Chongtai in Chongtailü mean double-petaled flowers, and it also got its name from the height of its soles. From the perspective of material culture research, the origin and development, configurations, and fashion connotations of Tang women's Chongtailü were systematically explored through mutual verification and comparative analysis of historical documents and cultural relics. The results show that the Chongtailu first appeared in the Southern Song dynasties, became highly popular in the Tang dynasty, and gradually disappeared with the popularity of arched shoes for women in the Song dynasty. Its main forms can be summarized into seven types, which are different from the forms of the Hutoulu that are popular in the same period, with more complex and diverse shapes. The function, shape, material, and other aspects of the Chongtailu reflect the luxurious social fashion of the prosperous Tang dynasty, and they are also the product of the aesthetic competition among the female group at the time. Its style provides a basis for reference and innovation for the development of women's footwear in later generations.
