Abstract To investigate the effects of moisture and underlying air layer conditions (UALC) with varying thicknesses on the thermal protective performance(TPP) of firefighting fabrics,both open and enclosed air layers were constructed based on a TPP testing apparatus. This setup simulated the spatial relationship between clothing and human skin during actual wear. The firefighting composite fabrics were wetted from both the outer layer and the comfort layer,and the TPP values were measured under different conditions to analyze the relationship between moisture,UALC and TPP. The results indicated that when wetted from the outer layer,the TPP value increased with air layer thickness,with the most significant increase observed at 3mm ,and that when wetted from the comfort layer,the maximum TPP increase occurred at 6mm for the open air layer and at 3mm for the enclosed air layer. Under open air layer conditions,the TPP of the fabrics showed a positive correlation with both air layer thickness and moisture level. Under enclosed air layer conditions,the TPP exhibited a positive correlation with the moisture level in the outer layer,and linear models were developed to describe these relationships. Furthermore,at the same moisture level,the TPP values followed the trend: open air layer > enclosed air layer > no air layer.
