Gilgamesh and the Tree of Life吉尔伽美仆和生命之树

Once upon a time, many thousands of years ago, the city of Uruk in ancientSumer was ruled by a great king, King Gilgamesh, who was two-thirds god andone-third mortal1. King Gilgamesh had magical powers, perhaps not as many asother gods, but still, he had some. He loved his people and he loved his magicalpowers. He also loved a good fight and a good adventure. Now and then, KingGilgamesh left his kingdom in the hands of his trusty men, and went off lookingfor adventure. One of his favorite places to look was in the forbidden forest thatbordered2 the city of Uruk. You never knew what might happen in the forest. Butthat day, nothing much was happening.

King Gilgamesh sighed3 heavily. He sat down and stared at the mountaintops. No one had ever traveled to the mountains to see what was on the otherside, not even Gilgamesh. The King had heard stories, though, about a magicalplant of everlasting4 life that could be found on the other side of the mountains.King Gilgamesh started walking. After 40 days and 40 nights, he came to a passin the mountains. Two very huge demon5 scorpions6 guarded the pass.

“Go back, little man,”sneered7 the twin demon scorpions.

“Do you know who I am?”thundered8 Gilgamesh. “I am Gilgamesh theGod. Get out of my way, you stupid bugs.”

The demons knew the name of Gilgamesh. Some of the monsters that hadlimped9 through the pass told awful tales of the horrible Gilgamesh, pointing to amissing tail here and a ripped10 out claw there. Gilgamesh! With a pop, thescorpions disappeared.
