Abstract:Natural salt wels are important sites which supply crucial resources for sambar deer(Rusa unicolor)and other ungulates to meettheir mineral needs.Analyzing the characteristics of behavior allocation of sambar deer at such special habitats is helpful to further enrich the behavioral knowledge of sambar deer. From July 2O17 to June 2O18,we continuously monitored the salt-licking behavior of sambar deer in the natural salt well area of Wolong National Nature Reserve by using remote video monitoring system, summarized the characteristics of their behavior allcation, and explored the diffrence in their behavior allocation among diffrent sexes, ages and seasons. Results are as follows:(1) There are 9 behaviors of sambar deer in natural salt wells:water drinking, rest, vigilance, moving, ruminating, lactation, modification, urination, and interaction.(2)Water drinking is the main behaviorofsambar deer in the natural salt well area, with the highest frequency of visits and distribution proportion, and rest is inthe second place. (3)Affected by season and sex, sambar deer visit salt wels the least in winter but the most in autumn, and the frequency of doe visiting salt wells is higher than that of bucks in all seasons.Meanwhile, the drinking and the rest allcation of bucks are higher than those of does and the vigilance allocation of does is higher than that of bucks. In summary, the primary behaviors of sambar deer at natural salt wellsare drinking and rest, with behavioral allocation influenced by both seasonand sex.Female deer exhibit a greater emphasis on vigilance, while male deer predominantly engage in drinking and rest.
