In recent years，the world has been undergoing rapid transformations.The mobility and restructuringof demographic，social， economic and other core factors have driven the evolution and development of cities，while also giving rise to responsive challenges in urban spatial planningand design.These challengesareembodiedina seriesofpractical initiatives：theimperative to create an age-friendly built environment that caters to the needs of people across all age groups; the renewal and renovation of urban districts in alignment with industrial functional restructuring;and the optimization of the built environment and public spaces in response to the global green and lowcarbonstrategy.All such endeavorshaveforged newdistinctivefeaturesof urban form and landscape.

Thisissue，themed Evolving Urban Identity，features twelve papers contributed by scholars from home and abroad.The spatial construction of the proposed capital city in Siberia and the landscape enhancement of Zhenjiang rooted in traditional Chinese urban planning philosophy embody holistic reflections on the holistic shaping of urban identity. Studies on the development and evolution of diverse typologies—including riverside areas，transit station precincts，central business districts，industrial zones，campus areas，urban peripheral green Zonesand rural areas—alongwith targeted renewal and design interventions，provide a comprehensive overview and in-depth mechanistic insights into shaping the distinctive identities of different urban and rural regions.These endeavors，integrating diachronicand comparativequalitativequantitative spatial analyses with designand renovation interventions underpinned by theoretical mechanisms，have seamlessly interwoven analysis and design througha diverse array of toolsand methodologies.In the Teaching Report section，the cultivation of professional competencies in urban design curriculaagainstthe backdropofurbanrenewal，and explorationsinto the planningof innovative districts tailored for Generation Z，demonstrate the innovative explorations and progressive practices of young faculty members and students in fostering high-quality livable environments.

We are witnessing a period of profound urban transformation. These shifts exert their impacts onurban space through both short-termandlong-term mechanisms of action，while also drivingthe continuityand evolution of ideas， strategies and methodologies-both time-honored and transformative-within the field ofurban design.The pursuit of high-quality livable environments and the cultivation of distinct urban identity remain the enduring anchors amid all such changes.
