Tortoise and Metaphor：A Delicate Interpretation of Bruce Lee's “Ontology of Kung Fu"

Abstract：This study interprets Bruce Lee’s“Ontologyof KungFu Mind”through his famous metaphors：“Be water”“Finger pointing the moon”and“Using no wayasway，having nolimitation as limitation”fromtheoutside inandfromtheobvious to the profound.Theresearch argues that Bruce Le's“Ontologyof KungFu Mind”，though inefable，canbe graduallyrevealed throughthreedimensions：theformofthebody，theintentionofthestrike，andtheuseof theontology.The“Bewater”uses theformlessessandshapelessessofwatertosymbolizetheinfiniteposibilitiesof thebodysform.The“Fingerpointing the moon”，metaphorconveysthespatialandtemporal intentionalityofthestrike.The“Using no wayasway，having nolimitation aslimitation”unifiesbodyandmind，enablingthebodytogeneratestrikesspontaneouslyindiferentcombatsituations.This studyprovidesaclasscalparadigmforthemoderdevelopmentof taditionalChinesemartialartstheoryandholdssignificant practicalvaluefornrichingthetechnicalandtheoreticalframeworkofChinesemartialartsandadvancingskilsinmartialarts.
