Research on the Mechanism of Regional Opening-up Driving the Quality Improvement and Quantity Growth of Corporate Green Innovation

Abstract： Opening up is a basic national policy of China. Together with green development， it constitutes one of the important points to support high-quality economic development. Taking A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges from 2013 to 2023 as samples， this paper adopts the “industry-year” fixed effect model to study the impact of regional opening-up on the quantity and quality of corporate green innovation. The results show that the improvement of regional opening-up can significantly improve the quality and increase of corporate green innovation， which is still valid after the endogeneity and robustness tests. The analysis of the action path shows that the degree of opening-up promotes the “quality improvement and increase” of green innovation by improving the innovation ability of enterprises and alleviating the financing constraints of enterprises， and the mediating effect of the two on the quality of green innovation is higher. Heterogeneity analysis shows that the degree of regional opening-up has a better effect on the promotion of corporate green innovation in heavily polluting enterprises. To sum up， this study provides micro-empirical evidence to support how opening-up affects corporate green innovation， and puts forward policy suggestions such as actively carrying out international R&D cooperation and talent exchange， focusing on green innovation R&D and paying attention to the application of international environmental and climate standards， heavy polluting enterprises should take the lead in promoting green innovation， and local governments should expand economic inclusion.
